Lisu youth being changed in ThailandThursday, December 03, 2009 - rflory
“'I love God! I want everyone at the conference to know that I love God,' wrote one of the kids who attended our Lisu youth conference in mid-October," share New and Jamie Rattanapamonsook, NMSI missionaries to the Lisu tribe, in their most recent newsletter. "The conference was the highlight of our ministry in Thailand thus far—about 140 kids in all, some Christians and some non-Christians, attended. Together we had three days of worship; education on issues like health, Lisu culture and language, and Christian lifestyle; sports competitions and games; bible studies; a Lisu singing contest and spelling bee; skits; and more, all for the purpose of uniting youth to each other and to Christ. At the end of the conference, about 40 youth came forward expressing their desire to either renew their commitment to the Lord or to accept Christ for the first time! It was an exciting and fruitful three days!"
New and Jamie are newly deployed missionaries to Thailand, getting settled into the
culture and the ministry. New is Lisu, and Jamie met him when she
began serving the Lisu in 2005. They were married in September 2008,
and had plans since their courtship to return to Thailand to give their lives to serving
New's people. They arrived in Thailand in July 2009.
"We started planning for the youth conference in August, writing letters to villages to invite their youth, working on the schedule,
delegating tasks, arranging rides for villages that don’t have vehicles, creating a song book for the youth, preparing to teach classes, etc. At the conference, it was fun to have youth from the villages where we had ministered because we had seen what the kids’ lives were like at home.
The kid who said that he wanted everyone to know that he loves God reminded us of the importance of passion and sincerity (particularly during the Christmas season when there are so many things to distract us from celebrating Christ’s birth). After all, that’s how people are going to see Christ in us. Whether you’re a stay-at-home-mom or working an 8-5 job, or even in full-time ministry, it’s easy to get lost in our schedule, to get caught up in the activities of daily life. Isn’t it?
“Sing to the Lord because of the great things he has done. Let the whole world hear the news.”
–Isaiah 12:5
We are reminded not to just go about our daily routine routinely, but to do it all with a purpose. People need to be able to see that our lives are a song to the Lord. There is great news, and it needs to be heard!
Partnering with you to proclaim the Good News,
